The Atom Formicarium is a new formicarium from Tar Heel Ants. To a degree like no other formicarium we have made before, these are strictly for founding queens to be given the chance to raise their first workers and brood and start their colony off in a more natural-sized habitat.
What Atom, Style B comes with...
2 Nestmates (1/4") - Watch video here: Nestmate Video
2 rubber stoppers for the nestmates
Syringe for filling the nestmates
Atom lid with magnets
Dimensions:1 1/2" diameter and 3/4" tall (40mmx17mm)
The lid on Style B now comes with magnets!
Style B can only house queen ants of any size.

We strongly recommend style A for these, though style B would be the choice if you cannot monitor your ants daily. During testing and development of the Atom formicaria, several colones of tiny sized ant species (Brachymyrmex patagonicus) were raised successfully in Atom Style B as well but Style B does not need manual hydration every 2-2 days. Atom A formicaria do need water added every 2-3 days.
The Nestmates, when filled at least partially with water, will allow moisture to pass through into the nest keeping the chamber of the Atom formicarium ideal for queens in the founding stages.
Suggestions for use: We recommend the use of a microscope with the Atom formicarium. This will enhance your experience with not just the formicarium but particularly the ants. See the videos below for examples of things you may see.
When workers arrive the idea is to prepare a foraging area ahead of time and then place the Atom inside the foraging area, removing the stopper. This nest will then be loose inside the formicarium. Optionally you can use this to move your colonies into Inception Chambers or other formicaria that you can place the Atom into and open up.
Adding a Foraging Area? The foraging area option is for when workers arrive. Until that point, unless you have a species that forages during the founding stage (in North America there are very few commonly kept species who do) you would not need your foraging area and Atom nest together.
In old days of raising founding queens there was the test tube method. Everywhere people inserted queen ants inside glass test tubes of various sizes where they could watch as queen ants laid their eggs and raised their first workers in a 360 glass display. This never set well with some people including one hobbyist who set it as his goal to make more naturalistic habitats for his pet ants. One day, this hobbyist dreamed of an idea where queen ants could be raised not in round glass tubes but a founding habitat more akin to what they would use in the their native habitats. Size was important in the final version, it was desirable to keep it very small as many ant keepers want to raise more than one queen. Hydration choices for the ant keeper were also important so more than one was devised for varying preferences (see other versions of the Atom). Most important was the interior "feel" of the nest. Everyone knows many ant keeping officionados liked to take a lot of photos and wanted them to look like someone snuck in and snapped photos of ants in their underground chambers (see below).

A little background for those interested....
The Inception Chamber is where the concept for the Atom Formicarium arose. With the Inception Chamber formicaria new methods were utilized to create tiny tunnels and chambers. These habitats are sized more closely to the ants natural habitats underground (and in wood etc.). The Atom formicaria is basically the smallest possible form of the Inception Chamber.
